Software for Students

KU provides free and discounted software to help students reach their academic goals. In addition to software available for download to personal computers, KU also provides access to a diverse selection of software in campus computing labs. Please Note: New students will be able to access KU's Web Store once they have completed enrollment.

Free Software for KU Students

Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and more. Students can access Office 365 through myCommunity, KU's online collaboration service, and download MS Office to their personal device.

To download Office via Office 365:

  1. Log in to with your KU Online ID.
  2. Select "Office 365" from the top left.
  3. Select "Install Office 2016" from top right.

What’s included in Office 365 at KU?

For Windows:
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Access, Publisher, Outlook, Skype for Business, and OneDrive for Business.

For Mac:
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Skype for Business, and OneDrive for Business.


EndNote is a software tool that helps researchers gather, manage, and cite references to scholarly literature and materials.

Read & Write is a comprehensive educational tool designed to support reading, writing, research, and studying for all students, particularly those with reading and writing, learning disabilities and who are learning English. Read&Write customizable toolbar provides reading, writing, studying, and research support tools within familiar applications, such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Adobe Reader and web browsers.

Skype for Business

Microsoft Skype for Business allows you to communicate and connect with colleagues using chat, voice, video and online meetings through a consistent user experience across computers, laptops, smartphones and tablets. Skype for Business is available as part of the Microsoft Office suite available to students for free by downloading through Office 365 to their personal device.

SAS is a flexible and extensible fourth-generation programming language designed for data access, transformation and reporting.

SigmaPlot is a statistical data analysis and graphic visualization package that is part of the Systat software family.

SPSS is modular, tightly integrated, full-featured statistics software for the analytical process, including planning, data collecting, data access, data management and preparation, analysis, reporting and deployment.

Recommended Software for KU Students

Antivirus Software
Sophos Antivirus is software that detects and removes malicious software on your computer. Always be sure to have antivirus software installed and up-to-date on your personal computers. KU uses Sophos Antivirus on all KU workstation computers. Students can download a free version of Sophos Home for PCs and Macs directly from Sophos.

Software in Campus Computer Labs

In addition to the free and discounted software available to students for download, KU IT also provides free access to a wide range of software in public campus computing labs. For example, students can access the Adobe Creative Cloud (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, etc.) in all public campus computing labs. 

KU's Virtual Lab

KU's Virtual Lab allows students to remotely access some of the most popular campus computer lab applications for free using a laptop, desktop computer or mobile device — anytime and anywhere they have an Internet connection. Current Virtual Lab offerings include: Microsoft Office, EndNote, MATLAB, and SPSS.
